🛵 Vesping Through Puglia — Day 4: Hands in the Dough, Heart in the Hills

By Day 4, something clicks. The Vespa feels like second nature. Your helmet fits just right. You no longer overpack your bag. And you begin to crave olive oil the way some people crave espresso. This is when the trip shifts from being a beautiful getaway to something deeper—something lived.


Today is all about getting your hands dirty, tasting the rewards of slow food, and cruising into the charming chaos of Martina Franca. It’s a perfect blend of sensory delight and cultural immersion.



👩‍🍳 Morning: Cooking Class in the Countryside

We ease into the day with a late start. After a leisurely breakfast at Masseria D’Erchia, we ride just a few kilometers to a nearby countryside kitchen, where a local nonna and her daughter welcome us like old friends.


The setting? A rustic farmhouse with a shaded patio, baskets of vegetables, and aprons waiting for us on the table. Today, you’re not just observing—you’re participating.


Together, we prepare a full Apulian lunch:


  • Handmade orecchiette, rolled the traditional way with your thumb and a wooden board

  • A fresh tomato sauce simmered with garlic, basil, and a local secret or two

  • Seasonal contorni like grilled zucchini, fava bean purée, or roasted peppers with capers

  • And for dessert? Almond biscotti or fig-stuffed pastries, depending on what’s in season



Flour flies. Wine flows. And conversation bounces between travel tales, kitchen tips, and laughter over whose pasta turned out most “creative.”


Then we sit down to eat what we made, surrounded by olive trees, sunshine, and the unmistakable pride of a shared meal. It’s one of those rare moments where time stretches, and you wish it would stay suspended a little longer.



🏛️ Afternoon: Exploring Martina Franca

After a short ride, we glide into Martina Franca, a town that feels like an operatic stage set—full of baroque curves, pastel façades, and grand piazzas where life unfolds at its own pace.


You’ll have time to explore independently:


  • Walk through the intricate streets of the Centro Storico

  • Visit Basilica di San Martino, with its stunning façade and ornate interior

  • Stop at a café for a caffè leccese (espresso with almond milk and ice)

  • Or browse local shops selling linen, ceramics, and hand-stitched goods



There’s no rush. Today is about letting the town tell its story—and trusting your Vespa to carry you through it.



🌅 Return to Masseria: Aperitivo al Fresco

We return to Masseria D’Erchia in the late afternoon with olive oil on our hands, flour on our sleeves, and a deeper understanding of what makes this region so alive.


Tonight, there’s no formal dinner. Instead, we gather for a casual aperitivo in the garden—local cheese, olives, taralli, cold cuts, and a bottle (or two) of chilled white wine. The group has bonded by now. The conversations run longer. The laughs get louder. And someone always says the same thing: “I don’t want this to end.”
